The Elixir Of Life-Apple Cider Vinegar

30 Jun 2015

The use of Traditional Apple Cider Vinegar in treating an ever-increasing variety of ailments dates back to at least 3000 BC.
Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician and "Father of Modern Medicine," also believed in the healing properties of vinegar, as did the ancient Babylonians before him and the Samurai warriors in Japan later on.
Apple cider vinegar is mainly made by crushing the apples & collecting the concentrated pale amber colour liquid like vinegar.
Organic, unfiltered apple cider vinegar also contains "mother," strands of proteins, enzymes, and friendly bacteria that give the product a murky, cobweb-like appearance.
Apple cider vinegar is of 2 types natural & synthetic. Synthetic ACV is cheaper & natural ACV is expensive.

Nutritional Composition

The various ingredients found in Apple Cider Vinegar serve to enhance its reputation as a true health benefit. Calcium, iron, sodium, potassium, malic acid, and pectin are several of the minerals that it has in perfectly balanced amounts. The main component of ACV is acetic acid which is also known as ethanoic acid which is a colourless liquid that has a pungent smell and sour taste.

It also consists of  the following nutrients:

Potassium - to avoid runny nose, hair loss, and brittle teeth.

Malic Acid - to fight infections from harmful bacteria and fungus.

Acetic Acid - accounts for the sour taste of vinegar; lowers the blood's pH levels thereby creating an inhospitable intestinal environment for bacterial & fungal infections.

Pectin - facilitates regulation of blood pressure and removal of bad cholesterol. Lastly, it contains other ingredients like Folic Acid, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Sodium, Phosphorus, Calcium, and Iron.

There are many brands of ACV available in the market, organic, synthetic, and those which contain the' MOTHER'. Most of us are confused as to which vinegar would prove to be beneficial for us and which variant of apple cider vinegar is better, so let's take a quick look at the differences which would help us in deciding which variant of apple cider vinegar is better.

Organic apple cider vinegar is vinegar in its natural form. It is a rich, amber colour that has a cloudy appearance referred to as the "mother of vinegar." Non-organic apple cider vinegar is vinegar that has undergone pasteurization. It has a bright colour and is free from cloudiness, which the customers find very appealing.
The mother of vinegar is where all the vitamins, minerals, and enzymes associated with apple cider vinegar are found.  The pasteurization process of non-organic apple cider vinegar removes the mother of vinegar hence it lacks essential nutrients.
The organic apple cider vinegar contains bacteria because of the lack of any pasteurization or distillation.  The vinegar does not contain intact enzymes and is not as easy to tolerate by the body.

Some other benefits of apple cider vinegar are as follows:

  • ACV is very effective in treating skin problems and preventing acne. The acidity present in ACV dries the blemished patch of skin and allows fresh, healthy skin to replace it.

  • Maintain the pH balance of your face's skin by mixing 1 part ACV with two parts water and then using it every day as a toner with the help of a cotton ball along with the T-zone i.e; forehead, nose, and chin.

  • Soothe a sunburn: Add 1 cup ACV to your bath, and soak for 10 minutes.

  • Give your hair body and shine: after you, shampoo, apply 1/2 tablespoon ACV mixed with 1 cup of water, then rinse.

  • ACV reactivates the hair follicles and also treats dandruff and itchy scalp.

  • Give yourself an at-home pedicure by soaking your feet in equal parts warm water and ACV. Its anti-fungal properties will keep your feet healthy, soft, and clean.

  • It also assists in varicose veins, as the high levels of vitamins in it works to deter and reduce the veins.

  • Target age spots: Mix 1 tablespoon orange juice with 2 tablespoons ACV to fade age spots.

This power-packed drink is loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. The combination of green tea and ACV is an excellent source of antioxidants for the maintenance of good health. Green tea is high in catechins and hence will help to increase the metabolic rate, reduce body fat, and improve overall weight loss. Cinnamon and ginger, both, helps lower cholesterol and type 2 diabetes.
